I am in my 13th year of teaching at Hitchin Boys’ School and I am currently Head of the PE department. I have been in this role for four years where I have had the opportunity to develop a sound understanding of leadership. I strongly believe that collaboration, team work and resilience are three key areas for success and I drive this within the department. I am currently working on the new GCSE and A Level courses and implementing a new assessment in Key Stage 3 to reflect the changes at GCSE.
Learning outside the classroom is not only a time to develop knowledge and understanding but it’s a valuable opportunity to allow students from all backgrounds and experiences to develop skills such as team work, respect, responsibility and discipline. This is something that I thrive on and lead the department along with 10 other staff to provide for students before, during, and after school and weekends.
Prior to being Head of PE I was a Head of Year 9 for five years. This was a role that I felt very passionate about and the pastoral system is still something I love being involved in. During this time, I developed a sound understanding of behaviour management and supported the leadership team with a new behaviour management system. I have led CPD sessions to new Heads of Year and worked very closely with outside agencies to support both students and parents.
